Curated by Peter TaylorDVD isn’t quite the digital panacea it’s become almost habitual to high-five. DVD transcodes sound and vision into its own image, generating highly compressed versions of the original video and sound files: inbred clones rather than identical twins of the same genetic source. But in recognising DVD’s limitations and burning their own way towards hybridist forms of expression, steadfast dilettantes in sound and image now have another opportunity to override design houses’ index of industrially (f)rigid bonus features and soft-focused technological jitter. Navigating this digitally affirmed course of self-fulfilling sufficiency and distribution, DVDrome II is neither a musical interlude for cinephiles nor a filmic excursion for music lovers. Dumping dichotomy, DVDrome II follows the vestige of curious inspiration traced by 2005’s Sound Check programme, offering up fresh platters of artistic excellence, independent thought and a belief that interesting film, video and sound emanate from the same primally creative urge.
