Die Zweite Heimat is not just a sequel to the impressive series Heimat. The maker, Edgar Reitz, goes a step further in several respects. He concentrates on a shorter period, the Sixties, and a more specific environment: that of students in Munich; mainly music students, although some also take an interest in film, as Reitz himself did in those years. Grand historical events played a major role in the background to the first series. In this series Reitz provides a much more detailed and also ambitious picture of recent German history.Die Zweite Heimat has about ten protagonists, but a key role is retained for the young composer Hermann, who comes from the region where the first series was set, the Hunsrück. The result has little in common with a common or garden television series. Reitz has actually made thirteen fully-fledged feature films. The parts are related in storyline and characters, but often a perspective or tone of their own. In each episode a different person from Hermann’s surroundings plays a leading role. As in the first series, Reitz uses black & white interspersed with colour. In the first series this juxtaposition was random, now the days are usually black & white and the nights in colour.Die Zweite Heimat is the most ambitious and expensive drama production in the history of German television. Most impressive is that this great investment by television has resulted in something that can only be described as cinema.
