After Evelyne, attention shifts to her new boyfriend Ansgar. They become inseparable, although Olga tries to come between them in a dramatic way. Ansgar is weighed down by self-doubt. His father was the spiritual leader of a religious sect and his parents always treated him as an bewildering artistic genius. He defies this image and studies medicine. Ansgar can be hard and cynical, especially against people from the older generation.Clarissa, Hermann's great love, wins a cello competition with a piece composed by Hermann. The others all focus their attention on her, which doesn't please Hermann. The artistic friends celebrate during carnival and Ansgar dies in an accident. The series has reached 1962, the year when 26 young German film-makers, among them Reitz, published the renowned Oberhausener Manifest.
