VALIE EXPORT
Valie EXPORT (1940, Austria) is an avant-garde artist pioneer in film and installation art. She studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Linz and studied painting, drawing and design at the National School for Textile Industry in Vienna. She is known for her provocative performances and expanded cinema work, through which she has produced one of the most significant bodies of feminist art in the post-war period, art that has attained an iconic status in feminist history. Through her artistic representations of the self, she questions the (female) body as a simple bearer of information and examines the politics of eroticism and the male gaze. Export’s well-known performance, Tapp und Tastkino (1968, 1969, 1989), was performed in many European cities, including Vienna and Munich. In 1977, she directed her first feature, Invisible Adversaries, an experimental drama film that premiered at the 1977 Berlin International Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. In 1967, she changed her name to VALIE EXPORT – written in uppercase letters, like an artistic logo. EXPORT changing her name was a gesture of self-determination through which she asserted her identity within the taboo-breaking performance arts of the Viennese art scene.
