Joe D’Amato
Joe D’AMATO (1936-1999, Italy) was a cinematographer, screenwriter and filmmaker. He was born Aristide Massaccesi, one of his many pseudonyms. He worked in many genres but is best known for his horror, erotic and adult films. In his early life, he assisted in the dubbing of Italian film productions and designed titles and credits. He then became a still photographer and camera operator, before beginning his career as a cinematographer and filmmaker. He began making small Western films like Go Away! Trinity Has Arrived in Eldorado (1972) before making the gothic horror film Death Smiles on a Murderer (1973). Emanuelle’s Revenge (1975) was his first pornographic film, in the Black Emanuelle series that was under his direction. He was the owner of Filmirage, a production company that produced his own and other filmmakers’ films for the international market. His last film was the adult film Showgirl (1999), a take on Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls (1995). Many international films festivals still screen his films.
