A special effects-packed sequel to the 2014 smash hit, The Blue Elephant 2 raises the stakes and tempo of its predecessor. Now leading a stable life, Dr Yehia’s new-found familial bliss is threatened by an enigmatic patient who might be haunted by a demon.
Marwan Hamed joined forces with novelist Ahmed Mourad for the fourth time in this popular sequel to their 2014 supernatural thriller – the first Egyptian film to surpass the LE100 million mark. Hamed ups the ante in this special-effects-laden extravaganza, which follows a newly reformed psychotherapist, Dr Yehia (Karim Abdel-Aziz), now leading a seemingly tranquil family life. This stability is threatened when he is assigned to investigate the case of Farida (Tunisian star Hind Sabry, from The Yacoubian Building and Ibrahim Labyad), who is accused of ritualistic murder. Farida’s unnerving knowledge of Yehia’s personal life suggests that she may be possessed by a demon, prompting him to once again seek the aid of the eponymous hallucinogen to solve the case and restore his collapsing family life.
Abundant with surreal imagery – lensed by Hamed’s frequent cinematographer Ahmad Al Morsy and scored by Hesham Nazih, Egypt’s foremost film composer – The Blue Elephant 2 extends the central themes of its predecessor: guilt and the tension between science and the supernatural, while delving further into questions of agency, accountability and the overpowering desire for control.
