After a five-year hiatus, Marwan Hamed returned with a project that would usher in his next chapter. Adapted from the 2012 best-selling novel by Ahmed Mourad, The Blue Elephant marked Hamed’s first collaboration with Egypt’s popular writer – a partnership that would yield six highly successful features, including El Sett (2025).
Karim Abdel Aziz – the current reigning king of the Arab box office – plays Dr Yehia, an alcoholic psychotherapist returning from a sabbatical as he attempts to rebuild his fractured life. He is assigned to draft a report on forensic patient and former colleague Dr Sherif (character actor Khaled El Sawy, in one of his most imposing performances), who is believed to have murdered his wife (Nelly Karim). Nightmares and hallucinations begin to torment Dr Yehia as he turns to the eponymous cryptic drug, which opens a portal into his altered states of consciousness.
Part murder mystery, part psychological noir and part supernatural thriller, Hamed deftly weaves these myriad strands into an intelligent meditation on guilt, trauma and the blurred boundaries between reality and fantasy.
