For SO(N)R, multidisciplinary artist Christine Ayo created a glass version of Abu, a traditional gourd-based wind instrument used by the Luo people of Kenya and Tanzania, particularly for announcements of death. Sounds produced with this glass instrument in Ayo’s studio in the Netherlands are overlaid on amateur 8mm films depicting public life in East Africa in the 1960s. Emerging from this historical, material and geographical dissonance is an enigmatic, disquieting meditation on time and memory.
