Director Nakata Hideo is best known for making the hugely successful Ring, which would be the catalyst for the global fascination with J-horror. However, he started his career in the 1980s as an assistant director on Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno line of silver-screen erotica. The growing share of sex films in V-Cinema allowed him to make his feature directorial debut and stay close to his roots.
Nakata would move on to other genres, but with Female Teacher: Forbidden Sex he set a template that would grow into a reliable subgenre of straight-to-video erotica. Lead actress Hitoe Otake, a former Miss Japan, would forge a career for herself in these kinds of V-Cinema softcore sex films, becoming known as the “V-Cinema Queen” and a regular of tabloid glamour spreads.
