While the USSR was busy promoting itself as a champion of cultural and political independence for the earth’s oppressed, it subjugated – just like Tsarist Russia – the indigenous people living in the empire’s vast steppes and eternal ice – Siberia and the Far North. An essay straddling fact and fiction on this awkward truth made from five recently re-discovered films produced by Kyivnaukfilm, the Ukrainian studio for popular science cinema and animation.
