Three female friends living in Lyon become caught in a tangled web of romantic intrigue in this warm and witty relationship drama from French filmmaker Emmanuel Mouret. A tender-hearted examination of the complexities of modern love, brought beautifully to life by a charming ensemble cast.
Joan (India Hair) is no longer in love with her adoring husband Victor (Vincent Macaigne). She confides in her best friend Alice (Camille Cottin), who appears to be content with her own comfortable but passionless relationship. Meanwhile Alice’s partner Eric is having doubts – and pursuing an illicit affair with a third friend, Rebecca (Sara Forestier). When Victor abruptly disappears, the friends are left in disarray – and as the dust settles, their chain of romantic intrigue becomes ever more tangled.
Actor-turned-director Emmanuel Mouret has been widely celebrated in France for films such as Love Affair(s) (2020) and Diary of a Fleeting Affair (2022), thoughtful romantic dramas which probe the tender contradictions of the human heart with wit and intelligence. Mouret’s latest, which premiered in competition at last year’s Venice Film Festival, is a typically charming chamber piece charting the shifting affections of a tightly knit group of teachers in picturesque Lyon. The excellent ensemble cast beautifully animate the dilemmas faced by the believably nuanced central characters, while the tragicomic tone brings to mind the work of Éric Rohmer and Mia Hansen-Løve, fellow French chroniclers of complicated relationships. Warm, insightful and breezily sophisticated, Trois amies is a deeply satisfying contemporary love story.
