Till Death Do Us Part

In the wake of her marriage to Edwin turning violent, strange occurrences in Renata’s apartment drive her to question her husband’s past loyalty, her long-held religious beliefs, as well as her own sanity. Indonesian director Upi returns to IFFR with a spine-chilling psychological horror.

After her action-packed superhero flick Sri Asih (IFFR 2023), Indonesian director Upi makes her comeback to IFFR with a tale of matrimonial terror. Renata struggles to keep her marriage to Edwin afloat, as it sours and turns violent. Her isolated routine is disrupted by strange signs of another presence in her apartment: an intruder or a supernatural threat? In moments of doubt, she turns to her vampish neighbour Asmara, whose brazen and carefree approach to life offers Renata a space of reprieve, but also plunges her deeper into the rabbit’s hole where hallucination leaks over into reality.

Using the horror genre as a lens to explore domestic violence, the film charges every second of Renata’s routine in her dull, cool-toned apartment with heavy tension. The film also plays with irony and contrast, binding stars Laura Basuki (Before, Now & Then, 2022) and Asmara Abigail (Stone Turtle, 2022) in a dynamic marked by a flirtatious intensity. Upi reaffirms her recent turn towards women-centred tales with Till Death Do Us Part, yet, as proven by her diverse body of work, her next moves are bound to surprise you.
