The story of the Morometes continues, as they navigate the hardships of life against the background of the post-war Communist regime. The sequel to Stere Gulea’s The Moromete Family (1987) was a box office hit after its premiere in Romania in 2018.
Almost thirty years after the release of his black-and-white instant classic The Moromete Family (1987), filmmaker Stere Gulea decided to return to the story of one family in the throes of history, capturing the hearts of Romanian cinemagoers a second time with his ambitious sequel The Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time, which was released to great commercial acclaim in Romania in 2018.
Here, Gulea’s humanist lens follows the character of Niculae (played by Iosif Pastina), the youngest son of the Moromete family, as he comes of age against the background of Romania’s post-war Communist regime. Pursuing a career as a journalist and novelist, Niculae finds himself leaving his rural home, and immersing himself in the chaos of the city, where it’s hard to stay abreast of political upheavals. Here again, Gulea proves himself as a skilled and sensitive director, creating a layered tapestry of a Romanian society caught in the chaos of the twentieth century.
