Stere Gulea

Stere GULEA (1943, Romania) has been a key figure in Romanian cinema since the 1970s. He is known for his carefully constructed stories, blending the universal and the culturally specific. In 1987, he directed the instant classic The Moromete Family, an adaptation of the homonymous novel by writer Marin Preda, which depicts the challenges of a traditional family from rural South Romania in the context of historical turmoil. His later works include Fox Hunter (1992) and I’m An Old Communist Hag (2013), both tackling the gloomy afterlife of communism, as well as two acclaimed sequels to The Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time (2018) and Father and Son (2024). Apart from his work as a filmmaker, Gulea has taught at the Bucharest Film School for more than 25 years.
