Award-winning and legendary filmmaking trailblazers Albertina Carri and Cheryl Dunye are both accomplished in creating spaces for underrepresented voices on the big screen with boldness and sensitivity.
Argentinian director Albertina Carri returns to Rotterdam to present her latest film (¡Caigan las rosas blancas!, IFFR 2025) as part of the Big Screen competition, after her Hubert Bals Fund-supported first feature No quiero volver a casa was screened in 2001. Liberian-American filmmaker Cheryl Dunye, who made history as the first out black lesbian to direct a feature film with The Watermelon Woman (IFFR 1997) will be presenting her upcoming project at this year’s CineMart.
Carri and Dunye will be in conversation with IFFR programmer Lyse Nsengiyumva to reflect on their vast experiences in radical queer filmmaking, how they have each played a role in bringing queer and marginalised stories to the table via the big screen. How have things changed along their paths, where we are now and the challenges the future holds, working across different genres and styles, and filmmaking as activism.
