IFFR Pro Dialogue: African film criticism

Event

IFFR 2024

This talk delves into the evolving and intricate landscape of film criticism in the African context. African film critics are few and far between and publications that spotlight the work of African auteurs are just as scarce.

What is the role that festivals can and should play in connecting critics with films and makers? Who gets to review African films at film festivals? And what are some of the ways festivals can do a better job in facilitating such connections?

Our speakers, each with their unique perspectives, will shed a light on the multifaceted nature of film criticism, addressing challenges, successes, and the current and future trends. The panel includes an eclectic mix of programmers, writers, journalists and film critics.

The panel will consist of:
- Chloé Ortolé, Founder of Tangerine Productions & Co-founder of Kimpavita Festival
- Maori Karmael Holmes, Chief Executive & Artistic Officer, BlackStar Projects
- Tambay Obenson, Founder and CEO, Akoroko LLC

Moderated by festival programmer and creative producer Lesedi Oluko Moche.
