Julie (Renate Reinsve) has been flitting from one study to another for years now. Her dreams for the future are as inconstant as her romantic ideals – but when she meets renowned cartoon artist Aksel, it seems like the real thing. Aksel is a little older, but this brings stability. Or does Julie, the eternal doubter, not want a stable relationship after all?
In his third part of the trilogy – after Reprise and Oslo, August 31st – Norwegian director Joachim Trier and his regular screenwriter Eskil Vogt zoom in on the expectations and privileges of the Western millennial. He does so with mild irony, and a sharp but loving eye for Julie’s twenty-first century dilemmas.
The Worst Person in the World is a romantic comedy, in which Trier (47) takes a critical look at people in their late twenties, but doesn’t spare his own generation. This melancholic, cleverly composed drama is given added sparkle by Reinsve’s attractive performance, worthy of the Golden Palm in Cannes.
