Starting from Scratch III: Japanese Single 8
Curated by Mariko Tetsuya, a passionate 8mm film believer These films go beyond the limitations of 8mm film technology; utilising the power and technique of this format. For independent film makers, the ‘digital revolution’ is said to have contributed to a new filmic style and even to how film makers approach their craft. I do not believe this phenomenon exists. The ‘digital revolution’ cannot replace 8mm film making, which does exist. For some in the Japanese independent film community, it is in fact a major force. As 8mm film equipment becomes obsolete – inconveniencing film makers by forcing them to carry sound recording gear while filming, for example – the medium is gradually losing its appeal. However, passionate 8mm film makers continue to produce unique, powerful and extraordinary works. Awareness of the challenges facing 8mm actually conjure up an aura of something unusual and exciting for audiences, shifting the stigma of technical limitations back to the pixel-heads. I have selected works by six Japanese 8mm film makers who believe in the characteristics and power of the format. Discover the superiority of 8mm film makers: the specific techniques and transcendence. I believe these works I am presenting to you convey the attraction of 8mm independent film making. (MT)
