Mrs Elisabeth Cerphal, the owner of the villa where Hermann's friends have their informal arts society, is in the limelight for The Eternal Daughter. The approaching death of her father forces her to look into the (war) past of the wealthy publishing family. Her strict father forces her, despite her advancing years, to finish her study, or face being disinherited. She cannot come to terms with the fact that the villa isn't really hers and has great difficulty facing the painful past.Hermann and Schnüschen have meanwhile had a child and attempt to live as a family. Clarissa returns from California and her cello is severely damaged. Volker embarks on a career as a pianist and improves his relationship with Clarissa. It is 1965, the Americans bomb Vietnam with napalm and the world loses Albert Schweitzer.
