Upi
UPI (1972, Indonesia) is a screenwriter and filmmaker behind some of the most popular films in Indonesia in the 2000s. Indonesia doesn’t have many female directors, but Upi is one of the few. In fact, Upi is known for directing some of Indonesia’s most popular films of the past decades. She made her debut in 2004 with the romantic comedy film 30 Hari Mencari Cinta/Looking For Love in 30 Days (2004) which was warmly received. Then, in 2006, Upi released a film titled Realita Cinta dan Rock n’ Roll/Reality, Love, and Rock’N Roll (2006) which sparked discussions due to its portrayal of a transgender character, which was highly unusual at that time. Upi is known as a bold director who enjoys exploring stories in various genres including drama, comedy, thriller, action and horror. Although her works are diverse, Upi is known for her own unique style. Respected critically and commercially, her work has been nominated for several awards at the Indonesian Film Festival, including Best Director for My Stupid Boss (2016). Sri Asih (2022), adapted from the 1954 comic book series, was selected for IFFR 2023.
