Wanjeri Gakuru

Wanjeri GAKURU is a Kenyan journalist, essayist, curator and filmmaker invested in gender equality and social justice. She is an alumnus of the 2024 Farafina Creative Writing Workshop, a 2021 Docubox Short Film Grant winner and was selected as the 2018 Literary Ambassador for Nairobi. Between 2018 and 2020 Wanjeri served as the managing editor of pan-African writer’s collective Jalada Africa and worked as co-curator and festival producer during the Collective’s inaugural Jalada Mobile Literary and Arts Festival, covering Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, DRC and Rwanda. She made her directorial debut in 2019 with the mockumentary Get Laid and followed with the documentary Nielimishe (2020). She has co-written feature films, including Supa Modo (2018), which premiered at the 68th Berlin Film Festival and was selected as the Kenyan entry for the 91st Academy Awards. Transaction (2024) is her international directorial debut.
