Paul de Nooijer
Paul DE NOOIJER (1943–2025, the Netherlands) was a Dutch photographer and filmmaker whose work engaged with surrealism, magic realism and staged imagery. Known for an eclectic approach, absurdist humour and a critical play with perception, his practice contributed significantly to the development of staged photography in the Netherlands from the 1980s onward. Trained as an industrial designer in Eindhoven, De Nooijer began working with photography in the 1960s, initially producing photomontages and later staged scenes and large-scale photographic installations for public spaces. From the 1980s, he increasingly worked with video, music videos, short films and the feature film Exit (1997). Much of his work was developed in close collaboration with his family, including his son Menno de Nooijer and partner Françoise Neeteson. His archive is held by the Mondriaan Fonds.
