An elderly shepherd takes on big business when he becomes the only holdout against property developers building a luxury resort in his tiny Sardinian village. A heartwarming underdog story about the things money can’t buy, complete with beautiful scenery and a distinctly Italian sensibility.
On the eve of the millennium, a Milanese businessman (Diego Abatantuono) sets his heart – and his property empire – on building a luxury eco resort in a sleepy Sardinian village. The locals, desperate for work, are delighted, but one barrier stands in the development’s way: Efisio (Giuseppe Ignazio Loi) an elderly shepherd whose family has grazed cows on the idyllic beaches for generations, is refusing to sell his land.
Negotiations drag on and curmudgeonly Efisio stands firm in the face of extravagant offers of money and infuriated entreaties from his neighbours. As the years pass, the shepherd and his daughter Francesca (Virginia Raffaele) find themselves under increasing pressure as the developers turn to underhand tactics to force the sale. Yet Efisio stays stubborn, and Francesca slowly begins to understand her father’s contrary perspective.
Inspired by a true story, Riccardo Milani’s film is a warm, funny and ultimately rather poignant David and Goliath story, set amidst gorgeous landscapes and anchored by charming performances, particularly from non-professional actor Loi (a real-life shepherd) as a most unlikely hero.
