A battle brews between middle-aged sisters over ownership of a holiday home on the Croatian island of Hvar. Igor Jelinović uses acerbic wit to show his mastery of scheming families and adult sibling dynamics in this debut feature.
Audacious middle-aged Tonina is a self-fashioned queen-of-the-castle who always gets what she wants and can do no wrong – in her own eyes. When Tonina’s sister learns that she secretly took ownership of the treasured family holiday home, the fun and games come to an abrupt halt. As family splits, alliances form, creating an only sometimes silent, but almost always deadly, war that rages on under the façade of a calm, cool and collected reunion. The question at hand is not if, but when, the bubble will finally burst.
Igor Jelinović sets his expertly paced debut feature Honey Bunny primarily against the peaceful and picturesque coastal Croatian backdrop, in which fiery performances from the ensemble cast keep each character constantly at a rolling boil. Laughter and second-hand embarrassment become one in this family drama with splashes of dry humour. When a good opportunity comes along, maybe family isn’t everything.
