As the country’s military leader grows increasingly despotic, undercover actress Rosarin assembles a team of dashing, fearless bandits to assassinate him. One hiccup: the bandits can’t stand each other. A stylish, shapeshifting spaghetti Western that blends fantasy, romance and eye-popping action.
Thailand, shortly after the Second World War, under a precarious military rule. In a bid to consolidate power and eliminate all opposition, Field Marshall Lert declares war on bandit groups controlling the central plains. Standing in his way are four charismatic brigands – bullet-bending Bai, iron-fisted Dum, Mahesuan (Mario Maurer) of the invulnerable amulet and master spellcaster Fai – who must set aside their personal rivalries to fight a common enemy.
After the anti-war, zombie historical film Operation Undead (IFFR 2025), Kongkiat Komesiri returns with another genre-bending, politically subversive period picture. Expanding the universe of the Khun Pan trilogy (2016–2023), 4 Tigers presents an irreverent spaghetti Western that liberally mixes comedy, romance, action and fantasy. Fearsome magic spells compete with brutal hand-to-hand combat, armed bandits take on reanimated corpses, and modern power games fuse with timeless legends.
While making a damning assessment of the political elite, 4 Tigers revives the romantic figure of the bandit as a people’s hero. With audacious tonal shifts and outlandish set-pieces, it offers an operatic work of constant invention and surprise.
