Miike Takashi is one of Japan’s most prolific and genre-defying filmmakers and has been a frequent guest at IFFR. His work has not only shaped contemporary Japanese cinema but also resonated with filmmakers and audiences worldwide.
With a career spanning over three decades and having directed over 100 features, including instant cult classics such as Audition (IFFR 2000), Ichi the Killer (2001) and 13 Assassins(IFFR 2011), Miike remains a beacon of creativity in an industry often constrained by convention. He returns to Rotterdam with his latest feature Blazing Fists (2025), mixing fresh and familiar energy in a story about friendship, loyalty and redemption against all societal odds. He’ll be joined in this conversation by legendary producer Misako Saka who has accompanied and facilitated this extraordinary journey. Moderated by journalist Patrick Frater, Miike and Saka will delve into creative processes, philosophies on the art and craft of filmmaking, and the inspirations behind their films.
