Discover your new homeland from the safety of a taxi’s back seat as countless migrants did before you in this VR experience. While the taxi driver reassures you and talks about his own arrival, long ago, the industrial estates and housing developments fly by. This tactile, stop-motion animation made with everyday hobby materials creates a surreal, constantly changing world.
Making Passenger was also a voyage of discovery for its makers Isobel Knowles & Van Sowerwine. They had been perfecting their stop-motion animation both in short films and installations since meeting at art school in 2001. However, they had not worked in VR before. They learned how for Passenger. Part of their research consisted of interviewing countless taxi drivers about their experiences as immigrants in Australia. That reality was then turned into a dreamy, animated world.
