Barbie is self-portraiture as dark surrealism, with the artist, a Hollywood émigré, playing a human Barbie who, stark-naked at home, ritually cooks and eats a Barbie doll. With slow-motion photography offset by a hypnotic score, L’Hotsky achieves an eerie truthfulness that lends the film the incisiveness of an art performance documentation film.
