The director Mariano Llinás, the actresses from the theatre group Piel de Lava and many others worked for about 10 years on La Flor. With a total length of 868 minutes (including preprogrammed intervals and end credits), this film is undoubtedly monumental. The maker himself says in an interview: “It’s a film like a Christmas tree”.
La Flor (Parte 1) has already been seen at IFFR 2016 when part two (included in the programme The Spying Thing) and part three were not yet completed, and it won the HBF Award. The first story is a kind of B-film about a cursed mummy; the second episode blends a drama about a musical duo that is still going to record a song together, despite the broken relationship, with the vicissitudes of a murky society looking for a serum for eternal life. Both episodes do have a start, but end in medias res.
Also see La Flor (Parte 2) and La Flor (Parte 3). As part of Critics’ Choice, the screening of Tue 29 Jan, 09:30 will be preceded by a video essay by Hugo Emmerzael, Jan Pieter Ekker and Dana Linssen.
