Core of the World

Having cut all ties with his family, Egor lives on a remote farm where he works as a vet. He feels better and safer among animals and keeps aloof from people. Echoes of his troubled past, along with the arrival of animal activists, gradually erode the refuge he has created for himself.

Russian director and screenwriter Natalya Meshchaninova participated in the IFFR Tiger Competition in 2014 with Hope Factory, her feature debut. In Core of the World she sketches a picture of a quiet yet impulsive, vulnerable man who longs for affection and acceptance. When Egor finally has contact with the outside world after having spent years in his own small circle, his perspective on life changes. The film provides a warmhearted view of how Egor oscillates between compassion and rage, and between two worlds – that of humans and animals. Grand Prix and Best Male Performance award at the Russian Film Festival Kinotavr (Sochi).
