June Givanni’s Pan-African Cinema Lounge features four screens which simultaneously provide a kaleidoscope of different historical moments, voices and events to draw us into the expansive world of Pan-Africanism:
W.E.B. Du Bois: A Biography in Four Voices (1996 Dir. Louis Massiah) Four prominent African-American writers: Amiri Baraka; Toni Cade Bambara; Wesley Brown and Thulani Davis present the story of one of the key advocates of Pan-Africanism as an intellectual movement.
Aimé Césaire: A Voice for History (Where Edges of Conquest Meet) (1994 Dir. Euzhan Palcy) Martiniquan poet and writer in 1930s Paris, also an influential participant in The First World Festival of Negro Arts (1966 Dir. William Greaves) in Senghor’s Senegal during this worldwide renaissance of black culture.
The CLR James Lectures (1983 Dir. Christian Wangler) Trinidadian writer, historian and activist discusses the politics and culture of Africa and the Caribbean.
