Brazilian director Neville D’Almeida has made countless films, many of them successful, such as box office hit A dama do lotação (Lady on the Bus, 1978). At the same time he is, in his own words, the most censored filmmaker in the country – and probably also the most controversial. D’Almeida is known as a provocateur who repeatedly seeks out the boundaries of the permissive in his work. His experimental films have been condescendingly described as (soft) porn. Despite international recognition at film festivals, in his own country he received less and less support and in the last twenty years has focused primarily on visual art.
This documentary leads us through a fascinating piece of Brazilian film history. D’Almeida’s work is shown in all its excesses, as well as its artistic innovation. Colleagues, actors, actresses and critics reminisce and the not overly modest D’Almeida is interviewed – albeit with compelling reluctance.
