When Christian, after living for years in America, returns to his parental home in the countryside of Australia, the reunion is pretty rough. His father’s imminent marriage, which has motivated his arrival, reawakens a painful past: Christian’s mother committed suicide and he considers his father responsible for the tragedy. Not long after he bumps into his old school friend Oliver, Christian finds out that his own tainted family history is linked to the apparently happy family life of Oliver. His urge to banish all falsehood drives him to a deed, the consequences of which he cannot see.
Theatre director Simon Stone made a universally-praised contemporary theatre adaptation of Hendrik Ibson’s The Wild Duck in 2011. In The Daughter, his first full-length feature, Stone successfully translates this tragedy of destiny to the seventh art.
