Hip-hop musical in which the beat never stops, most of the dialogue is rapped and almost all of the characters are practised experts in the martial arts. The most extravagant production so far by cult director Sono Sion.
In a futuristic fantasy-world Tokyo, the cannibalistic Yakuza boss Lord Bubba rules the roost. For years he has controlled countless gangs in the city by playing them off against each other. But things start to change when a mysterious young woman arrives. She even persuades the only peace-loving clan in the city to take up arms against Bubba and his sadistic companions.
Sono Sion, whose oeuvre comprises both humorous Yakuza spectacles and meandering dramas, serves up the insanity in bright neon colours with plenty of female nudes and lengthy fight scenes. A bizarre mix of The Warriors (1979, Walter Hill), West Side Story (1961, Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise) and Japanese exploitation cinema.
