‘The answer is Korea!’ Jang’s funniest and most provocative ensemble piece is essentially a state-of-the-nation report, a social panorama that tackles a range of endemic problems. In a freak accident on the night highway, four cars hit one woman pedestrian. So four carloads of people have to report to the police: a couple of gangsterish debt-collectors with a corpse in the back seat, a bickering working-class family, a father and son and four members of a Depressives Anonymous group. The dead woman was chief question-setter for a popular TV quiz show, a show that has never yet paid out its top cash prize. And she had a clue to the answer of the top-dollar question in her pocket. The satire of materialism is pretty cutting, but the all-star cast makes the most of all the character-based comedy too.
