Over the years, photographer and film maker Donigan Cumming has shot an enormous amount of material of the seamy side of life. He filmed people who were never filmed, or only rarely. Cummings did not look away from people in the gutter. Sometimes he went out looking for the unbearable, addicted, sick and dying and didn’t go away. It has provided beautiful, stubborn and very shocking films that have been screened in Rotterdam in the past. For the photo project Lying Quiet he went through the mountain of material again. During that research in his own treasure chest, a film forced itself upon him. A collage. The film in which the story makes space for the purist filmic realism. (GjZ)
