Bed Stories

Seven stories about love and hate, all of which take place in bed. Characters in these stories are connected, either through family ties, sexual relations, or in some other way. The film makers provide a glimpse of life in a modern city as if through a keyhole. All the stories are very intimate and dramatic, and at the same time, full of sarcasm. Being in bed is often associated with sex, and there is a lot said about it indeed. Characters desire it and condemn it, but somehow they never get around to the act itself. Bed can also be the world of a sick person, and in this film, bed is the world of contemporary man, humble, faceless, lonely, and frustrated with society, seeking refuge in the most intimate of places. Director Kirill Serebrennikov is a famous theatre director and avant-garde artist. Bed Stories is based on a play written by Vladimir and Oleg Presnyakov. Although the director maintains a primary theatricality, the film is an interesting effort to combine theatrical and avant-garde film methods. In a genuine way, and with excellent dialogues and acting, it unmasks the banality of the most private situations, the ones that are often sad and funny at the same time. (AP/LC)
