Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne – an introduction
The festival regularly chooses one of the many film schools in the world for a presentation in Rotterdam. This time we are proud to present a selection from the Swiss film school éca l, in other words the Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne, from the year 2003, augmented with two older titles. The film department of the school, led by Lionel Baier, trains industrial designers with the graduation subject of cinema. After the foundation course, the three year film training guides the students in directing short films fiction and documentary, but also music videos, commercials and industrial films. Firstly the students are helped to make short ‘vignettes’ one minute long and then they are assisted by renowned film makers such as Jacob Berger, Ursula Meier, Ulrich Fischer, Noémie Lvovsky, Abbas Kiarostami and Michael Dudok de Wit. The selection we made is striking for its stylistic and thematic diversity, lucid yet occasionally wayward points of departure and a meticulous finish.
