The unmarried checkout clerk Maria pushes aside her loneliness by getting (too) interested in the problems of others. When she takes an interest in the pensioner Richter who seeks attention and warmth, her everyday life gets very mixed up. Stuck in their unfulfilled dreams and desires, both become bogged down in misunderstandings. A painful confrontation ensues.
