Poly Vinyl Big Band is a multimedia turntable orchestra, a big band only made up of DJs. Their performance involves developments in pictures and sound in the course of the twentieth century. One of these developments is the disappearance of orchestral music as accompaniment for film and theatre. Poly Vinyl samples sound fragments that are then associatively forged into a new whole. At the same time, the images of three classics from the silence cinema, Battleship Potemkin, Un chien andalou and Modern Times, are sampled and reinterpreted. The films form the building blocks for a parallel editing on three screens. The live soundtrack is made for 10 turntables and the necessary electronics, with the participants themselves arranged as a traditional big band.
