A Sample of the Moscow Film School VGIK
Since the demise of the Soviet Union ten years ago, several important changes have taken place in the field of film education. It has become too expensive for students outside Russia to study in Moscow, so the more remote regions such as the Caucasus and the Baltic states have started their own film courses. But St. Petersburg has for instance also started its own film school. These developments resulted in an enormous diversity of training methods and film styles. The festival has asked the well-known Russian film critic and theoretician Andrei Plakhov to look at the oldest of these film schools, the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK), and to make a selection from the last two years. In the future, the festival regularly wants to look at other film schools from the former Soviet Union.
