In his short début Two Were Riding a Motorcycle, Serik Aprymov first shapes his most honest feelings, a picture of the world that is not contaminated with elements from outside film. The charming power of his work also emerges from the principles and professionalism with which the subject matter is tackled: his cooperation with amateurs, his way of looking, the poetic mood, the unmistakable nostalgic tone. The film has a secret to hide, in a way; one that the director does not try to unravel or explain. Comparable, as Aprymov said in an interview, with nature that does not explain why thunder and lightning happen, but just shows it. Aprymov's view of reality is sharp, very direct and just as irresistible as the illogical and absurd in the most everyday things he shows us. With his first short film, Aprymov takes a first step towards his specific style: an almost documentary, poetic realism in which the camera observes people in their everyday activities and allows the viewer to think up what is going on inside them, what problems and pleasures they experience.
