Lain is a thirteen-part animation series that was broadcast on Japanese televion. Behind the fairly simply drawn and innocent-looking figures is a mysterious, elusive and complex story filled with metaphors, suggestions and clues. The theme is related to that of The Matrix: cyberspace as an alternative ubiquitous reality, Internet as pseudonym for reality. Lain is set in the near future. One of Lain’s classmates has committed suicide. Since then, Lain has been receiving e-mails from the dead, as have the other classmates. ‘Hello, I am not dead, I’ve only relinquished that part which is flesh…’ Lain spends more and more time at her computer and is sucked into a reality somewhere between daily and digital. She finds out that she has more than one personality in different worlds. Or maybe she only exists on-line…
