This film was motivated by an opera project on Monteverdi. Kentridge: 'I wanted to see if I could combine my technique of charcoal animation with the music of Monteverdi. And I wanted to see if there was a link between seventeenth-century music and twentieth-century systems to investigate the body: CAT scans, ultrasound and X-ray equipment, MRI, etc.'
