The film follows the passionate love affair between the Dutchman Theo Staats and the 'Indo' (half-blood) singer Ems for a period of ten years, from 1939 to 1949. They meet on the eve of the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies. Their love affair is hampered by personal and historical circumstances.
