Starting point for Disappearance at sea was the tragic adventure of Donald Crowhurst, who in 1968 set out to sail the around the world. Realising within a few weeks that his boat would not make it to the Southern Ocean, he set about deceiving the world as to his real position. He kept two log books: one false but ingenious document of his alleged progress around the world; the second described his real journey and his gradual loss of mind. Finally, overwhelmed by his deceit, Crowhurst jumped overboard only a few hundred miles from the British coast.
