Lumière Playback IV

After a year of centenary, a lot of products have been made about old films and they are not all the same old stuff. A surprising number of film-makers demonstrated the vitality of documentary archive material in particular. (See Lumière Playback I, II & III). Discussion about the artistic/essayist re-use of probably indesctructive images. With: Hartmut Bitomsky, Andrej Ujica, Harun Farocki, Ahmed Atef, Mark Rappaport, André S. Labarthe, Henri-François Imbert, Gustav Deutsch, Marcel Ophuls, Yervant Gianikian, Angela Ricci Lucchi, Philippe de Pierpont, Matthias Müller, Kevin Brownlow.

The White Balloon

The White Balloon

Last December, Jafar Panahi and his fellow filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof were sentenced by a Revolutionary Court to six years imprisonment. They were also banned from making films for a period of twenty years(!). In the eyes of the Iranian regime, it seems that even an innocent children’s film like The White Balloon, in which a 7-year-old child does everything possible to recover the money to buy a goldfish before New Year, is a threat to the state. In protest at these events, the IFFR is organising a free screening of this charming film, once withdrawn as an Oscar submission by Iran.
