Many television and feature films have been based on Georg Büchner’s (1813-1837) classic play about Weltschmerz and human loneliness. When asked ‘Another Woyzeck?’ the makers answer: ‘Why not?’ The universal dramatic characteristics of the story invite new insights and interpretations every time. Woyzeck was originally a barber, but in he works in a small shed by the railway. Woyzeck is a huge, unshaven and sweaty fellow. His life is dictated by the train timetable and the loud tormenting voice on the tannoy. Every day Woyzeck shaves his arrogant boss and every day the hate in his eyes is visible when he sets the knife to the throat of his tormentor. Woyzeck is openly deceived by his wife Maria, yet he loves her all the same. The meaninglessness and cheerlessness of Woyzeck’s life in are perfectly in keeping with the expansive and cold Hungarian landscape where ‘s version is set.
