A group of Russian Jewish actors who have fled the horror and anarchy of their 'fatherland', arrive in Israel in 1990. In a circus tent in Tel-Aviv they perform a vast, insane and frightening play about a group of German Jews, led by the famous clown Adam Stein, who ended up in Israel in the late forties straight from the death camps. Events in the circus tent slowly penetrate the lives of the actors as they wrestle with the complex reality of modern Israel. The dividing line between their true identity and the Jewish characters they play become increasingly vague.
