A striking Bukowski film which more than does justice to the sensational melancholy of the world described with alcohol, sperm and blood. In this grim comedy, based on several short stories by Charles Bukowski, Simon (Jean-François Stevenin) and Dédé (played by producer, scriptwriter and director Patrick Bouchitey himself) are two tragi-comic adventurers who are liked by their friendship and their craving for oblivion and ecstasy. Days pass as if they are on a different planet. The two forty-year-old adolescents seem abandoned on the platform from which the train to normal life has long departed.Bouchitey himself takes on the most expressive and crazy character, making it possible for Stevenin, who often plays expressive and crazy roles, to show a lesser-known register of his talent. The film has been shot in a close and uninhibited way and it is the actors who sustain the film.Lune froide is the first full-length feature by Bouchitey, who is best known as an actor. It was originally planned as a short. This short film was also made and is included in the full-length version as a flash-back. Bouchitey won a César with the short in 1990 and attracted the attention of e.g. Luc Besson, who helped produce the long version. The atmosphere of the film is largely determined by the pictures shot in black & white and the music of Didier Lockwood. Lune froide also includes many fragment s of rock music by e.g. Jimi Hendrix, Procol Harum and The Kinks.
